Katelyn Ann Photography | Mentoring Sessions

Katelyn Hambick of Katelyn Anne Photography, words are not enough to share how much I love you as a dear friend, value you as a woman of God, admire you as a photographer, and adore our time together!! Having you as a mentor has been transformational for my photography business, and having you has a friend has been life transforming!

Katelyn and I first met when she came to serve at We Will Go Ministries as a Mississippi College student volunteer. I remember so many conversations about Jesus, loving the lost, ministering to the poor and living out the Great Commission. While our focus was on Jesus, we were both excited to learn more about photography! I was in a season of dabbling in photography as a “tent making” job to support my life on mission, and I specifically remember talking about what new camera we were saving up to invest in! As I moved overseas in 2013 and photography became just a hobby again, Katelyn launch full force into building a wedding photography business. I have LOVED watching her grow as a photographer, refine her style and build her business over the years, and I was OVER JOYED when she was able to shoot our wedding in January 2015!!

When we first returned to Mississippi to visit in October 2016, We Will Go was in a season of wedding fever and I was asked to shoot two weddings in those first couple of months. I was out of practice and having to use borrowed equipment, but these two missionary weddings reignited  my love for wedding photography! Once we were able to settle into a new home and rhythm as a family, I contacted Katelyn asking if I could second shoot some weddings with her and she very graciously said yes!!

I shot my first wedding with Katelyn in December and I felt like I was all thumbs! If I am completely honest, I am not sure if I gave her any usable images at that first wedding. My greatest contribution to the day was holding the spotlight for the sparkler exit photos! But praise the Lord that Katelyn saw potential in me that I did not see in myself at that time.

With the new year came the opportunity to not only shoot weddings with Katelyn, but to be mentored by her! In March I started having monthly mentoring and training days at Katelyn’s home studio. During these training sessions she taught me how to shoot with my flash in manual mode and how to set up and use her lighting system for receptions. We pulled up the images I took at past weddings with her and talked through what was good, and how to adjust my settings or frame my shots differently in order to get better shots the next time. More importantly than improving my photography skills, Katelyn has taught me how to truly love and serve clients well. Katelyn is so much more than a photographer who will show up on your wedding day and take pretty pictures. Her heart is to walk with you through your entire wedding process, building a relationship with her brides and grooms, loving and honoring them all along the journey. When she shows up on the wedding day she is recognized as a beloved friend, instantly part of the inner circle of closest friends and family, and able to capture those precious intimate moments that only a close friend knows to capture.

So far I have shot six weddings with Katelyn, and with each I have learned so much and improved my photography skills. The biggest encouragement has been to have Katelyn trust me a bit more with each wedding, assigning me to key shots throughout the day, and learning to work as a team to serve the Katelyn Anne brides and grooms as best we can!

Another benefit Katelyn Anne brides & groom may not even be aware of is that we pray for each one by name at every training session and before each wedding. Photography is so much more than a business, it is a ministry.
